The technique of composing on spec has its depreciators, yet it’s a decent method to break into the composing market, and regardless of whether the piece itself is turned down, it might show to an editorial manager that your pitch merits a look, or that you may be a decent counterpart for an article they need an author for. 7. Drive forward Rehash stage 6. On the off chance that your pitch or your spec article is dismissed, send it to another person. Until 1992, it could be purchased over-the-counter in health food stores and was used primarily by bodybuilders to reduce fat and build muscle. In 2000, GHB was classified as a Schedule I drug. Similarly to drugs like Rohypnol, GHB has earned a reputation for being used to facilitate sexual assault, as it is odorless and mostly tasteless and can cause unconsciousness and memory loss. Learning about GHB, including what it looks like and what it does to your mind and body, is perhaps the best way you can protect yourself or someone you love from becoming a victim. Also Known As: GHB is also known as the date rape drug, liquid ecstasy, soap, easy lay, vita-G, Georgia homeboy, scoop, grievous bodily harm, liquid X, and goop. Drug Class: GHB is classified as a depressant. Common Side Effects: Side effects of GHB include euphoria, hallucinations, drowsiness, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, vision changes, and blackouts. How to Recognize GHB GHB can be a tablet, capsule, white powder, or clear liquid. It is usually mixed with a flavored drink or alcohol, which can mask its slightly salty taste. GHB is commonly hidden in water bottles, eye and nasal sprays, and mouthwash containers. What Does GHB Do? GHB increases the activity of the neurotransmitter known as gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), which carries messages from one cell to another. By increasing the amount of GABA activity, brain activity is reduced which can lead to symptoms like drowsiness, relaxation, decreased inhibition, amnesia, sleep, coma, and even death. These side effects make it a common choice for drug-facilitated sexual assault and rape. GHB is also used recreationally. Recreational use of GHB is most common at nightclubs, circuit parties, sex parties, and sex clubs. Users report positive effects including euphoria, increased sex drive, and tranquility. The drug is often combined with other illicit substances, including methamphetamine, MDMA, and ketamine, as well as alcohol.  The combination can heighten its effects but is also potentially lethal. The effects of GHB typically begin in about 15 to 30 minutes, and with only a tiny amount of the drug, and peak at 20 to 60 minutes. What the Experts Say GHB is an especially deceptive drug. Experts say that many people dont notice or remember the negative side effects of having taken the drug, leaving them with only the memory of the high. But GHB is considered highly addictive. In fact, the difficulty of overcoming a GHB addiction has been compared to that of heroin addiction. And dependence is associated with severe withdrawal symptoms, which some researchers say is a leading cause of the high relapse rate of those who try to quit. One study linked regular GHB use, especially when users were left unconscious, with negative effects on long-term memory, working memory, IQ, and higher levels of stress and anxiety. Off-Label or Approved Uses GHB was first used in France in 1960 as an anesthetic. In the 1990s, GHB was sold over-the-counter in vitamin supplement stores and marketed as a sleep aid and growth hormone enhancer (to enhance sexual performance and to build muscle and reduce fat). During this same year, at least 100 people were reportedly poisoned using GHB, and the Food Drug Administration (FDA) banned sales, declaring the drug unsafe and illegal, except under FDA-approved, physician-supervised protocols. Because of concern about GHB, and other similarly abused sedative-hypnotics like Rophynol, Congress passed the Drug-Induced Rape Prevention and Punishment Act of 1996 in October 1996. This legislation increased Federal penalties for use of any controlled substance to aid in sexual assault. In 2000, GHB became a Schedule I drug, meaning it has high abuse potential, no medical use, and is unsafe. The pharmaceutical drug sodium oxybate, a formulation of GHB sold under the brand name of Xyrem, is used to treat excessive daytime sleepiness and cataplexy (sudden weakness) in people with narcolepsy. It is a Schedule III drug (lower abuse potential, medical use, and moderate or low dependence risk) and only specially enrolled medical providers can prescribe it. When used illicitly for recreational purposes, Xyrem converts to Schedule I status. In Italy, GHB is an approved therapy to block alcohol cravings, similar to the use of methadone for heroin addiction treatment.   Common Side Effects Some of the common short-term side effects that GHB users experience include: DrowsinessDizzinessProblems with visionFeelings of relaxationHeightened sensualitySeizuresMemory lossSweatingSlow heart rateNausea and vomitingBlackoutsLoss of consciousness Depending on the dose, some people can experience severe side effects of GHB, including coma and seizures. Combining GHB with other drugs such as alcohol can intensify the effects and result in nausea, breathing difficulties, and even death. In roughly a third of patients admitted to the hospital for using GHB, bradycardia (slowed heart rate) and hypothermia (drop in body temperature) are reported. Signs of Use If you or someone you care about suddenly feels overheated, sick, weak, or dizzy (and hasnt knowingly taken drugs or drank excessive amounts of alcohol), it could be a sign of GHB intoxication. Other signs of GHB use may include: Reduced inhibitionsReduced ability to make judgmentsConfusedSleepySedatedSlurred speechFeeling weakHeadachesDifficulty breathing Recognizing Overdose The risk of overdose with GHB is high. If you or someone you care about experiences any of the following signs of overdose call 911 or poison control at 800-222-1222.VomitingLoss of a gag reflexLoss of control over bodily movementsShaking, tremors, or seizuresLoss of consciousness and unresponsivenessLack of pain responseRapid side-to-side eye movementProfuse sweatingReduced body temperatureRespiratory breathing (slowed below 15â€"20 breaths per minute) Myths Common Questions There is a common misconception that it is safe to take club drugs like GHB in small amounts. But GHB is unpredictable and the strength can vary from batch to batch; even one pill can cause an adverse reaction. What’s more, overdose on a small amount is possible.   Tolerance, Dependence, and Withdrawal Recreational users of GHB can build tolerance and need to take more and more of the drug to achieve the desired effect. Many users become dependent on the drug to mitigate withdrawal symptoms. How Long Does GHB Stay in Your System? GHB exits the urine and blood fairly quickly, which is why its important to get to a hospital and request a urine sample if you suspect youve been drugged. For most accurate results, the Office on Womens Health recommends that you wait to urinate, bathe, shower, brush your teeth or hair, eat or drink, or change your clothes until after youve been examined and tested. Like other drugs, how long GHB stays in your system depends on how much of the drug was taken as well as your sex, weight, metabolism, and hydration and activity levels. Addiction Regular use of GHB can quickly lead to physical and psychological dependence. Unfortunately, people who misuse GHB often have difficulty recognizing a problem with their GHB use, in part because the drug has the ability to wipe out memory after taken. While people can experience addiction differently, some telltale signs and symptoms include: ToleranceWithdrawalSecretivenessLyingStealingFinancially unpredictableChanges in social groupsRepeated unexplained outings, often with a sense of urgencyDrug paraphernalia“Stashes” of drugs (GHB liquid can be stored in water bottles, eye and nasal sprays, and mouthwash bottles.)Difficulty cutting down or controlling the addictive behaviorLoss of social, occupational or recreational activitiesPreoccupation with getting, using, and recovering from drug useExtreme mood changesShifts in sleeping patternsSleeping a lot more or less than usual, or at different times of the day or nightUnexplained fatigue or changes in weight Signs and Symptoms of Addiction to Watch For Withdrawal If you or someone you love is looking to stop using GHB, its best to seek a medically-supervised detox, which may include a tapering process to control and reduce the risk of dangerous withdrawal symptoms. People addicted to GHB are at risk of acute withdrawal symptoms, including: Severe anxietyDeliriumDisorientationHallucinationsTremorInsomniaParanoiaTreatment-resistant psychosis How to Get Help Given its association with sexual assault and rape, if you believe you have been given GHB, dont wait to reach out for help. If youre not sure where to turn, the anti-sexual violence network RAINN (Rape, Abuse Incest National Network) has a national hotline (800-656-HOPE) that will route you to the nearest sexual assault service provider. If you or someone you love is misusing GHB, your healthcare provider can help recommend resources for a safe, medically-supervised detox as well as inpatient or outpatient addiction treatment including disease education, counseling, and support groups.

Importance of Faith in Young Goodman Brown by Nathaniel...

Importance of Faith in Young Goodman Brown by Nathaniel Hawthorne In Young Goodman Brown, the main character, Goodman Brown has a bout with his own faith. He ends up losing this battle because of the wickedness in everyone else’s hearts. He begins by wanting to be the evil one, then progresses to be the faithful one as the night in the woods goes on. His name has a lot to do with the character in the story. The â€Å"Young† in his name is to symbolize innocence, and â€Å"GOODMAN† is pretty self-explanatory. He goes off in to the woods and comes with a lost faith in everyone else in the town. Goodman Brown decides he wants to go off into the woods for one last night of evilness before married life really kicked in. He says, †What a wretch†¦show more content†¦They knew that the evils of the real world hid in the forest, as did Goodman. But he still went in! He let this man with the serpent staff keep him from turning around, and getting out of the woods. On page 277, Goodman says, â€Å"Come witch, come wizard, come Indian powwow, come devil himself! and here comes Goodman Brown. You may as well fear him as he fear you!† This is where Goodman turns back to the good side, when he finds out the devil is consuming his Faith. When Goodman and Faith are on the evil altar, Goodman says, †Faith! Faith! Look up to Heaven, and resist the Wicked One!† Obviously Faith was evil-hearted because she was at this gathering with the devil. She went there to be inducted into the group and Goodman tried to stop her. This wasn’t a dream he was having because on page 280 it says, â€Å"while a hanging twig, that had been all on fire.† There was a twig on fire and it brushed against his cheek. Hester Prynne Free Essays

Hester Prynne signifies a women of grace and wild spirit. Strong-willed and beautiful, Hester Prynne has also defied the Puritans ways. Though she is ladylike and prideful, she is faced with the trouble of being a sinner. We will write a custom essay sample on Hester Prynne or any similar topic only for you Order Now The innocence of any human can be taken away in a flash, and in the case of Hester Prynne, her innocence escapes her after she commits a horrific sin. Hester is immediately isolated in her town because she commits an act of adultery, resulting in a Scarlet Letter forever engraved on her bosom, serving as a constant reminder of the mistakes in her past. In many ways throughout The Scarlet Letter, Hester overcomes her sin and redeems herself to her town, revealing her inner power and strength. Even though Hester’s situation leaves forces her to be an outcast in the town, she still confines strength and discards the label of being an â€Å"Adulteress† by showing stability. Hester Prynne is the main symbol of isolation and alienation throughout The Scarlet Letter. Nathaniel Hawthorne emphasizes her isolation by writing that she is â€Å" Alone in the world, cast off by it, and with this sole treasure to keep her heart alive, she felt that she possessed the indefeasible rights against the world† (Hawthorne 100) because of her sin. As a symbol of evil and darkness, Hester is viewed by her strict Puritan town as an outsider. After Hester’s crime of adultery was known to all, Hester’s reputation and appearance of what people viewed her as is completely changed and her goodness started going unnoticed. The town’s harsh thoughts of her sin are revealed through a local woman as she testifies that â€Å"†¦ At the very least, they should have put the brand of hot iron on Hester Prynne’s forehead† (Hawthorne 36). Hester never escapes the feelings of being alienated in the progression of her life. Her â€Å"ornament,–the scarlet letter,–which was her doom to wear† (Hawthorne 79) was shown throughout town, sequestering her from everyone else. Hester knows that even if she was allowed to take off the letter, â€Å"It is too deeply branded† (Hawthorne 63) and always be imprinted in her heart. This makes Hester disconnected from her holy society and forces her to become a â€Å"black flower† (Hawthorne 45). Though Hester is isolated, she is still able to find strength in herself. Hester Prynne is very unique and different from the other women in her town because of her â€Å"richness of complexion† (Hawthorne 50). A lot of her strength is revealed in the beginning of The Scarlet Letter. One of these very early examples of her strength is when Hester is put in front of the town on a scaffold. Instead of Hester shaming away from her sin when she is put in front of her town, she â€Å"appeared more lady-like†(Hawthorne 50) and confident in herself. Even when Hester has been publicly humiliated and is forced to continue wearing The Scarlet Letter on her chest, she does not try to hide her sin. As she stood there with â€Å"a certain state and dignity† (Hawthorne 50) in front of the judgemental Puritans, she overcomes fear and confines her strength. Not only does she show her toughness by not concealing her sin, but she also begins to change people’s negative opinions about her. Hester shows her goodness in the community by helping the poor and making clothes. Hester’s new attitudes allow the people to begin to interpret Hester’s Scarlet Letter differently because of her kindness. Instead of being known as the unacceptable adulterer, â€Å"they said that it meant â€Å"Able†; so strong was Hester Prynne, with a woman’s strength† (Hawthorne 158). This shows that Hester puts her determination above all and is able to step out of her isolation by giving back to her community. These actions enable her to fit in again as a normal citizen and redeem herself as the woman she knows she can be. All in all, it is difficult for many people to look past their own unfortunate situations and the actions for which they hold remorse. However, unlike many others, Hester is eventually able to just that. Hester experiences a great deal of suffering due to her past sin of adultery, but despite that she is still able to overcome that through her dignity and strong-will. Hester proves that The Scarlet Letter was not needed to be taken off in order for Hester to change. She also disregards multiple offerings to remove the devil’s mark from her bosom, and responds by saying that â€Å"It is too deeply branded. Ye cannot take it off. With that I might endure his agony, as well as mine† (Hawthorne 63). She clearly accepted her sin and stayed strong not only herself but for Pearl and the other around her to come full circle by the end of the novel. The Scarlet Letter provides great challenges for Hester, but she does not let the struggles get to her. By staying a strong and determined woman, Hester changes her entire life for the better and comes around to redeem herself in her small Puritan town. How to cite Hester Prynne, Essay examples
